Have you heard of the Spirit of Soccer? If you tend to think it is some sort of a guardian angel for Iraqi kids, you’re living under a rock. You might be busy playing online games and DominoQQ, while the world would have changed a bit.
Who or what is the Spirit of Soccer?
Spirit of Soccer is an organization which attempts to raise awareness about landmines to the people of Iraq. It calls itself a “demining” organization backed by the FIFA Foundation, and has been in operation since 2009. It has programs designed for more than 300,000 children all across Iraq.
How has Spirit of Soccer helped Iraqi children?
Iraq is a nation which is devastated by war and horror. Wars have made Iraq unsafe for its people who are almost always living in fear. Add to that, there are also hidden landmines and bombs which lay buried in the soil of Iraq. To stay safe from perils of buried unexploded bombs and landmines, Spirit of Soccer has simple football programs to tell children about the risks. The children are then asked to deliver the same message to their elders.
There are more than 50 locals affiliated with the Spirit of Soccer, who serve as the Mine Risk Education Instructors. They visit the local schools and communities to spread the awareness of landmines. These instructors also train the young generation on football- aside from educating them about landmines and hidden bombs and how to stay safe from them.
The Spirit of Soccer organizes football competitions to help children enjoy amidst all the dangers they are already into. They also organize training sessions for young instructors in cities. With all that the organization is doing, it will not be false to say that Iraqi children have indeed found a good friend in Spirit of Soccer.
